Tax and National Insurance number
As an employee in the UK you can earn up to £ 6,475 for tax year up to April 2010 before tax bands are applicable. Any earnings above £ 6,475 will be liable to income tax.
Annual tax bands (April 2009)
20% up to £ 37,400
40% from £ 37,400
The bandings may change at the start of each financial financial year, which begins on 6 April.
Personal allowance is usually allocated throughout the year on a weekly/monthly basis depending on method of payment. This is to ensure that an equal proportion of the tax liability is collected throughout the year instead of a lump sum being collected at end of the year.
