Dress Code
You will need to dress in a professional manner -
we advise you to work in smart clothes until you ascertain the dress
code for that particular school. We recommend a collar and tie for
men and skirt or trousers for women, with the exception of PE teachers.
Leggings, jeans and trainers are not acceptable standards of dress
in any school.
Body piercing although fashionable is not regarded
as professional within schools, please remove any facial piercing,
with the exception of ears, before arriving at school.

Curriculum
Teachers are constantly finding with new initiatives
being introduced that they are dealing with more and more paperwork
as well as training courses. Overseas trained teachers particularly
comment about the amount of bureaucracy that is required as a teacher
within schools in the UK.

Support
Schools are now becoming more and more supportive
to teachers and education personnel whether for a short term or
long term basis than they ever have before. This is mainly due to
the increased staffing shortages that are increasing in schools
across the UK. If schools do not offer sufficient support to teachers/education
personnel then it does not encourage that person to go back to that
school.

Preparation for the Day
It is advisable to have a file of lessons/activities
that can be used for assignments in which there is no work set.
It is not advisable to take textbooks, curriculum documents etc.
Most schools do set work however there may be instances where work
is not set and you should be prepared for this.
Please refer to the links section under resources
for details on the National Curriculum www.dfes.gov.uk

library to gather teaching materials.

Peaks & Troughs
Please check out details on school term dates if you
are unsure of holiday periods for teaching in the UK (link to education
system term times)
Early Childhood and Primary teachers are in demand
constantly throughout the year, however, September is probably one
of the quietest months for supply since the 6 weeks break leads
to few cases of last minute sickness.
The demand for secondary supply teachers is low during
the summer term mid June/July.
From mid July all schools close for a 6 week summer
holiday.
